I’ve just been over at Rowan Simpson’s blog and was struck by one particular post. Rowan has been huge successful after selling his company FlatHunt into Trademe and becoming one of the key forces behind the success of New Zealand’s most beloved online auction site.
He asks ‘What kind of car would you buy if money wasn’t an issue?’
A car is such a good metaphor for general life after success. A car is a traditional symbol of success, but what happens if it doesn’t fit you? What happens when you can have anything money can buy but you suddenly realise that a lot of things money can buy are not the things that really make you happy.
One of the comments to Rowans post included a link to a video I watched a while ago, about happiness and what makes people happy. The results were very surprising.
That is not to say that someone in Rowans position would be in any way unhappy, it’s just that success in reality may be a lot different from what we imagine. Maybe it is saying that success to entrepreneurs is the knowledge that they made something happen and the money is kind of irrelevant in the end… Either that or Rowan is just not a car person
Either way, it’s worth a read… It’s not every day you get to hear about life after you achieve a major goal
update: eeek. Rowan sold FlatHunt, not Flatfinder - I’m terrible with names… Sorry Rowan! And I’ve found some awesome flats through your site, geez!
